Karen Kelsky Talk/Q&A – 28 April 2017 – Invitation to SALC Students: 10 places available

SoSS have arranged for Karen Kelsky to present a talk/Q&A on Friday 28th April to our students and we have 10 spaces available that we would like to offer to SALC PhD students.

The talk is free of charge to students and Karen is the Founder of The Professor Is In which provides advice and consulting services on the academic job search and all elements post academic career.

Any questions just let me know, the details of the talk are below.

Event Details:

Date: 28th April 2017

Talk/Q&A:11:00 – 12:30 in G_33 Humanities Bridgeford Street

The event will cover:

  • The big-picture conditions of the U.S. tenure track job market
  • How to think like a search committee
  • The four core qualities of a successful tenure track job candidate
  • The all-important 5-Year Plan
  • The ethos of job market documents
  • The most common mistakes made by job seekers
  • The three keys to academic interviewing
  • The non-academic option

You will examine the common errors of tone made by job-seekers, such as narcissism, excessive humility, and hyper-emotionalism and you will leave with a broad understanding of the real (as opposed to fantasy) criteria of tenure track hiring. Whilst also learning how to tailor your record and application materials to maximize your chances of success. Also how to strategize a career plan for the academic market, while keeping an eye on possible post-academic options. While focused on the US job market much of Karen’s advice is applicable to the UK too.
